Product overview

Na-R-Alpha-Lipoic Acid (Na-RALA) is the sodium-stabilized form of R-Alpha-Lipoic acid, a naturally occurring antioxidant compound found in every cell of the human body. While the body produces it in small amounts and it can be found in foods such as red meat and organ meats, the stabilized Na-RALA form offers significantly higher bioavailability than standard alpha-lipoic acid supplements. As a supplement, it is commonly used to support healthy blood sugar and insulin sensitivity, neutralize free radicals, regenerate other antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and glutathione, and promote nerve health.

Learn more about Na-R-Alpha-Lipoic Acid

What is Na-R-Alpha-Lipoic Acid?

Na-R-Alpha-Lipoic Acid (Na-RALA) is the sodium-stabilized form of R-alpha-lipoic acid, a naturally occurring compound found in every cell of the human body. It is produced inside the mitochondria, where it acts as a cofactor helping enzymes convert nutrients into cellular energy. R-alpha-lipoic acid is also the biologically active isomer of alpha-lipoic acid — the exact form your body naturally synthesizes and uses.

The body only produces R-alpha-lipoic acid in small amounts, and standard ALA supplements contain a synthetic mixture that is only half as effective. That is why many turn to Na-RALA specifically — to get the active form in a more absorbable, stable format.

As with regular alpha-lipoic acid, dietary sources include animal products such as red meat and organ meats like liver, heart, and kidney, as well as plant-based foods like spinach, broccoli, and tomatoes. However, food sources alone provide relatively modest amounts, making supplementation a practical choice for those seeking more targeted support.

How does Na-R-Alpha-Lipoic Acid work?

Na-RALA works primarily by delivering the biologically active R-form of alpha-lipoic acid in a stabilized, highly absorbable format. By binding R-ALA to sodium, the compound is protected from degradation, allowing it to reach plasma concentrations up to three times higher than standard alpha-lipoic acid supplements. This means more of the active compound reaches the cells and tissues where it is needed.

Once absorbed, Na-RALA functions as a potent antioxidant and mitochondrial cofactor. Unlike most antioxidants, which are soluble in either fat or water, alpha-lipoic acid is soluble in both — allowing it to act throughout virtually every cell and tissue in the body. It neutralizes free radicals directly and also works to regenerate other antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and glutathione, extending their protective effect.

Beyond its antioxidant action, Na-RALA is involved in several key metabolic pathways. It supports insulin signaling and glucose uptake, assists mitochondrial enzymes in converting nutrients into cellular energy, and helps reduce oxidative stress in nerve tissue. Through these mechanisms, Na-RALA contributes to healthy blood sugar regulation, energy metabolism, and nerve function at the cellular level.
